EQL [EQUAL] BAND
"THE FIRST SMARTWATCH BAND THAT HEARS ALL HEARTBEATS EQUALLY. REGARDLESS OF SKIN TONE."
Together with my partner, Lisa Lim, we uncovered a devastating truth. Photoplethysmography, known as green light technology, employed in wearable devices likes like smartwatches doesn't accurately record the heart rate for all skin tones. More alarmingly is that the public trust their smartwatches for accurate data, but more significantly this data is employed in clinical trials [70% of trials], to create treatments and diagnoses—meaning many populations are been left out of the health algorithm.
We recruited a team of engineers to overcome the barriers of PPG / Green Light Tech.
Tackling several methods to overcome the shortcomings of PPG, we eventually netted out on a companion device that could be adaptable to any smartwatch— since the FDA had no ruling it it was vital to us that this was accessible and adaptable. Essentially, no matter that model of smartwatch, we wanted to give participants the right to same health data by enabling their wrist strap.
We created EQL BAND. Lisa and I worked with Yzabelle Munson, Everett Eldrich, Alexis Moses, Joe Graiff, Joe Theohararkis, and Allen Lu to engineer the first prototype that hears all heartbeats regardless of skin tone. data by enabling any smartwatch wrist strap.
